Finley Tipton

IRVING – 18-year-old Finley Tipton is looking forward to beginning her collegiate lacrosse career after a major ACL reconstruction surgery at Medical City Las Colinas.

During a high school lacrosse game, Tipton pivoted directions and felt an instant pain in her right knee. After being carried off the field by her coach due to the severity of the injury, she went to Medical City Las Colinas for a complete diagnosis. Orthopedic experts diagnosed her with a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint.

“Medical City Las Colinas offers comprehensive orthopedic services, allowing us to treat the unique needs of each patient,” says Stephanie Stephens, MD, Tipton’s orthopedic surgeon at Medical City Las Colinas. “Finley’s goal was to get back to the sport that she loved so we designed a surgical and rehabilitation plan to repair her ACL and strengthen the muscles that support her knees.”

Tipton underwent a leading-edge technique ACL reconstruction with a hamstring autograft, where hamstring tissue from behind the knee is used to create a new ACL. The hamstring muscles run down the back of the thigh. The graft used in ACL reconstruction is taken from the hamstring tendon along the inside portion of the thigh and knee to form a strong graft.

Following her surgery, Tipton had physical therapy at the Medical City Las Colinas outpatient rehabilitation clinic. Her therapist worked with her to create a customized lacrosse-based therapy exercise plan. The Medical City Las Colinas physical therapy team specializes in a wide variety of injuries and conditions for patients ranging in age from teens to seniors.

Tipton, a recent high school graduate, completed her senior year on the field following her surgery. In the fall, she will attend Wellesley College on a lacrosse scholarship.

“After my surgery, I am completely pain-free and I’m confident in my physical ability,” says Finley Tipton, orthopedic patient. “I am so excited to continue my lacrosse journey in college next year and that is all thanks to Medical City Las Colinas.”

2022-may-news-tips-to-stay-safe-north-texas-heat.j

IRVING – The start of May has been among the five warmest on record in North Texas, according to meteorologists. Unseasonably hot temperatures earlier than normal have provided little time for the body to acclimate, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and prompting emergency room physicians at Medical City Las Colinas to provide safety tips.

“The elderly, people with underlying medical conditions and those who work outside are most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses,” says Nathan Ham, DO, medical director of emergency medicine at Medical City Las Colinas. “Gradually increasing outside heat exposure can help the body better adapt and can be important to avoid overheating.”

Heat acclimatization is the improvement in heat tolerance that comes from gradually increasing the intensity or duration of work performed in a hot setting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat-related illness, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, sends more than 67,000 people to the ER annually, with more than 700 deaths.

To help North Texans acclimatize to the early surge in high temperatures, medical experts at Medical City Las Colinas recommend following these tips:

  • Gradually increase the workload performed in a hot setting over a period of 1-2 weeks
  • Stay hydrated, start drinking fluids before going outdoors
  • Limit alcohol
  • Eat regular meals, which provide electrolytes lost in sweat
  • Dress in loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and wear a wide-brimmed hat

Physical condition, age and other factors may affect how the body copes with heat. Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Rapid pulse
  • Faintness
  • Cramps
  • Tiredness or weakness

Medical City Las Colinas medical experts recommend seeking medical treatment if symptoms don’t improve after getting out of the heat and if they worsen or are still present after one hour. Learn more about how to stay cool and avoid heat-related illness here

This distinction places Medical City Las Colinas among the top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting patients and providers.

Halloween is a fun-filled time for families to enjoy, but activities such as trick-or-treating can result in serious injury for children. This Halloween, Medical City Las Colinas offers safety tips to keep loved ones out of the emergency room.

Children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year, according to the National Safety Council. Medical City Las Colinas encourages parents to keep their kids safe with reflective wear, flashlights, a buddy-system and traffic-safety precautions.

“For motorists, it is very important to pay attention and travel slowly,” says Nathan Ham, DO, medical director of emergency medicine at Medical City Las Colinas. “Notice children moving alongside the side of the curb and slow down between parked vehicles on the side of the road.”

To help families enjoy Halloween while protecting their loved ones, medical experts at Medical City Las Colinas are sharing additional Halloween safety tips:

  • Practice COVID-19 safety precautions. Travel in small groups when trick-or-treating and practice social distancing with other groups. Practice hand hygiene between each activity.
  • Buy or make flame-resistant costumes and make sure they fit properly. Masks, hats or other accessories that are too big can obstruct children's vision. Costumes that are too large can cause kids to trip and fall.
  • Choose bright colors for visibility. Dark clothing tends to be hard to see at dusk. To improve visibility, attach reflector tape, glow sticks or blinking lights to a child’s costume.
  • Supervision is important. Ensure children only travel with known family and friends. “It is important to discuss with children not to go into the homes of people they do not know,” advises Dr. Ham. “Children should not get into an unknown vehicle to get a snack or a treat - and that should all be discussed in advance.”
  • Put cell phones away. Adults should keep close watch on children at all times and stay off their phones, especially when crossing the street.

IRVING – Thousands of people in the United States will go to the ER with fireworks-related injuries during the July 4th holiday, prompting emergency room physicians at Medical City Las Colinas to provide safety tips, in advance of festivities, to help prevent these accidents.

“Each year during this holiday weekend, we see extensive hand and facial injuries in the ER due to improper handling of sparklers and fireworks,” says Amrita Nanda, MD, emergency medicine physician at Medical City Las Colinas. “Sparklers can reach over 2,000 degrees and require close adult supervision of children to reduce the risk of burns.”

In 2020, more than 15,600 fireworks related injuries were treated in hospital emergency departments, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The report shows that more than 60% of the injuries were to the hands and face and the highest rate of emergency department-treated firework-related injuries were among children under the age of 15.

To avoid injury from sparklers and fireworks, the experts at Medical City Las Colinas recommend following these guidelines:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks
  • Do not use alcohol when using fireworks
  • Only light one firework at a time, then move away
  • Never try to relight a “dud” firework, wait 20 minutes before approaching the firework, then soak it in water overnight before disposing of it
  • Never shoot fireworks into metal or glass containers

Most cities in North Texas do not permit the use of fireworks, outside of professional shows, except in unincorporated areas. Local county ordinances should be reviewed before igniting fireworks.

If someone does suffer a firework burn, experts recommend:

  • Cool the burn with cool (not cold) water to stop the burning process
  • Remove clothing and jewelry from the injured area, unless the clothing is adhered to the burn
  • Cover the area with a dry clean sheet or loose bandages
  • Seek medical attention if necessary
