IRVING – On World Blood Donor Day today and in response to the low blood supply in North Texas, Medical City Las Colinas is encouraging the community to donate blood.
Medical City Las Colinas is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive next week. The Red Cross will have its mobile unit parked in front of Medical City Las Colinas, 6800 N MacArthur Blvd, on Wednesday, June 23, from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Community members may sign-up to donate online or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
Blood banks often experience shortages during the summer months, especially near the July 4th holiday, when schools are out, blood drives dwindle and regular donors take vacations. The COVID-19 pandemic has also impacted donations. June 14, World Blood Donor, raises awareness of the need and thanks voluntary donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
“Blood products are vital to many of our patients,” says Michael Waldron, MD, Medical Director of Laboratory Services at Medical City Las Colinas. “We are proud to partner with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive and provide additional support to our patients and community members.”
Every blood type is needed. Donors can help as many as three different people with just one donation. Individuals who may rely on blood products include trauma victims, cancer patients, mothers giving birth and premature babies among others.
Potential donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health. People who present to give blood should eat a nourishing meal before donating
and must bring a photo ID. To protect Red Cross staff and donors' health and safety, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation. Masking is required.
