Medical City Las Colinas is inviting the public to see its expanded emergency department on Thursday, April 25, from 4 – 7 p.m., prior to officially opening to patients. Lite bites and drinks will be provided, along with door prizes given out every 30 minutes.

Part of a $14.5 million renovation project, the emergency department expansion adds six patient rooms to the 12 bed unit, including a new trauma room, an ER dedicated 64-slice CT scanner, and a comfortable and updated waiting area.

“We are proud to grow with the community and provide family-focused and lifesaving emergency care to our community,” says Daniela Decell, CEO of Medical City Las Colinas. “This project is further evidence of our continued commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”

In addition to tours of the emergency department expansion, the public is invited to see up-close Medical City Healthcare’s helicopter and meet its flight crew. The helicopter is specialized to transport high-risk maternal patients and pediatric patients, including Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) infants.

The expansion and improvement project at Medical City Las Colinas is part of a major capital investment initiative of more than $1.7 billion spent or committed over five years across the Medical City Healthcare system. Investments include expansion and improvements to existing hospitals, new services such as trauma, oncology and behavioral healthcare, upgraded technology and the purchase of new facilities.

Medical City Las Colinas kicked off a $14.5 million expansion project to meet the growing needs of the Las Colinas and surrounding communities.

Over $8 million of this project is focused on enlarging and renovating the emergency department, including an additional six patient rooms, an ER dedicated 64-slice CT scanner and a comfortable and updated waiting area.

“This project is further evidence of our continued commitment to the care and improvement of human life,” says Daniela Decell, CEO of Medical City Las Colinas. “This expansion was necessary to serve the community while actively pursuing our trauma designation.”

In addition, the expansion includes construction of a larger laboratory with leading-edge technology and equipment. The existing pharmacy will expand into the space of the old laboratory.

This expansion was scheduled to start in March 2018, but was delayed several months due to Red-Tailed Hawk eggs found in a nest of a tree in the area. Once the eggs hatched and the federally protected birds left the nest, construction was allowed to begin.

The expansion and improvement project at Medical City Las Colinas is part of a major capital investment initiative of more than $1.7 billion spent or committed over four years across the Medical City Healthcare system. Medical City Las Colinas has been named a 5-star recipient in three categories for women’s care by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The recognition is part of the 2018 Women’s Care Awards.

Medical City Las Colinas was among the top 10-percent or higher nationally in quality outcomes. The hospital was named a 5-star recipient for vaginal and C-Section deliveries for the fourth year in a row and a 5-star recipient for gynecologic procedures for the second year. These 5-star ratings indicate that the hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the evaluated procedure.

“These 5-star awards demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to quality and would not be possible without the focus and training of our staff and physicians,” said Daniela Decell, CEO at Medical City Las Colinas. “The recognition reinforces our shared mission to the care and improvement of human life.”

“Consumers place high-quality outcomes at the top of their wish list when selecting a hospital, so health systems that have achieved this particular distinction stand out among their peers,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Especially in an environment where consumers have more choices than ever before about where to receive care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes for their patients is more important than ever.”

Medical City Las Colinas is one of nine Medical City Healthcare hospitals honored for outstanding women’s services in the 2018 Women’s Care Awards, including Medical City Alliance, Medical City Arlington, Medical City Dallas, Medical City Lewisville, Medical City McKinney, Medical City North Hills, Medical City Plano, and Medical City Weatherford.

Medical City Las Colinas is on baby watch as they have 3 Red-Tailed Hawk eggs in a tree outside their Labor and Delivery breakroom window. In fact, this family of hawks is delaying a $16 million expansion of their Emergency Room. Because these birds are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, their nest must not be disturbed until they all leave the nest.  The tall bald-cypress tree that the hawks call home is right where the 7 new Emergency Room beds will be located.

It is estimated to take anywhere from 2 - 5 months before the eggs hatch and the baby birds grow enough to leave the nest, so until then, the staff at Medical City Las Colinas will continue to be on baby watch.

On September 26th, Medical City Las Colinas was able to recognize five first responders at the Farmers Branch City Council meeting for their role in saving the life of a Carrollton resident. Farmers Branch Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedics Isaac Chan and Jacob Little (Medic 133) and Captain Matthew Graham, Apparatus Operator Lynn Harpold, and Second Apparatus Operator Stephen Crawford of Carrolton Fire Rescue’s E-115.

On May 23, 2017 Farmers Branch Fire Department Medic 133 and Carrollton Fire Rescue Engine 115 were dispatched to an unconscious person in Carrollton Texas. On arrival, Medic 133 found a male patient unconscious on the ground with labored breathing. A few movements later the patient went into cardiac arrest. CPR was initiated, and the cardiac monitor showed that the patient was in ventricular fibrillation. This heart rhythm requires immediate defibrillation and administration of anti-arrhythmic medications. Multiple rounds of medication and defibrillation were delivered and pulse was restored while in-route to Medical City Las Colinas.

Once at Medical City Las Colinas, the patient was admitted to ICU. After being treated at Medical City Las Colinas for 10 days, the patient was discharged home.

“Without the care that was provided by the medics, this patient would not be alive today,” said Jeremy Rountree, Assistant Chief Nursing Officer.

IRVING, TEXAS – Twenty-two year old Michael Loftis collapsed from a heart attack at the finish line of the Irving Half Marathon in April. Thanks to the quick thinking of two nurses from Las Colinas Medical Center, he is alive today to tell his story.

Nurses Laura Rampley and Ron Samuel volunteered to help at Las Colinas Medical Center’s booth at the Irving Marathon.  Little did they know that in addition to passing out goodies and talking about the hospital’s orthopedic services, they would have to put their nursing skills to work that morning.

Just after crossing the finish line in the half marathon, Michael Loftis collapsed, unresponsive. Laura and Ron saw the commotion and went to see if they could help. Some onlookers   poured water on Michael thinking he was just overheated, but Laura quickly realized the situation was much more serious and jumped into action. After checking for a pulse and realizing he didn’t have one, she instructed Ron to start chest compressions while she went to get an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) device and Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) personnel.  Together, they continued CPR and shocked his heart with the AED until his heart beat returned and he regained consciousness.

EMS transported Michael to a hospital, where it was determined that he had suffered a heart attack due to a congenital heart defect.  Five days after collapsing and being brought back to life, he underwent successful open heart surgery, and is planning his upcoming wedding.

Three weeks after his heart attack, Michael Loftis got to meet the two Las Colinas Medical Center nurses that saved his life. Click here to see a video of their interaction and learn more about Michael.
